The other day I found myself extremely bored and lazy. In my lethargic state I decided that the easiest form of entertainment was to watch a movie. It was then that I discovered my mom had rented a movie that day before and had yet to return it. The movie was Sunshine, a film I had never heard of before. I read the brief description and deemed it worthy of my unproductive time. I proceeded to place the disk in our DVD player and pressed play.

From the moment the movie started my interest was peaked. The movie begins with a short monologue of background info. It is the distant future, the sun is dying, and a group of astronauts are on a mission to launch a bomb into the sun to reignite it. This movie has it all: explosions, space missions, a world on the brink of disaster, and as I found out throughout the film, an excellent musical score.

I was enthralled for the entire length of the film, and grew very fond of John Murphy’s handiwork. He composed most of the music in Sunshine, and was also behind the musical ventures of 28 Days Later; a feature I also thoroughly enjoyed. The music in Sunshine did differ a great deal from 28 Days Later, but such is to be expected when transitioning from rage-infected post-humans to heroic space exoduses. This change in style; however, definitely did not mean a change in quality. The score was very moving and fit very well with the mood and setting of the story. I personally got myself a copy of the soundtrack immediately after seeing the movie.

This science fiction film by Danny Boyle leaves the viewer very satisfied by the time the end credits roll. With the great music, beautiful cinematography, and impressive acting throughout the movie, I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone in need of a good evening activity.
